How To Take Abilify (Aripiprazole)
This medication is taken by mouth. This medication can be taken with or without food. .
Abilify Side Effects
Abilify (Aripiprazole) may cause headache, nausea, constipation, anxiety, restlessness, weakness, nervousness, rash, sleepiness, drowsiness, insomnia, vomiting, weight gain or akathisia (uncontrollable muscle spasm or jerking of extremities). Less common side effects of Abilify are blurred vision, runny or stuffy nose, coughing, fever, sneezing or tremor.
More serious side effects include convulsions, difficulty breathing, fast heartbeat, high fever, higher or lower blood pressure, impaired memory, increased sweating, loss of bladder control, severe muscle stiffness, sudden loss of consciousness, tiredness or fatigue, unusually paler skin or impaired memory. Contact your physician in the event of serious or persistent side effects.
Abilify (Aripiprazole) Warnings and Precautions
More serious side effects may include diabetes, high serum cholesterol and triglycerides or neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
In patients taking atpical antipsychotics, such as Abilify, weight gain and increase risk of diabetes have been noted.
Abilify (Aripiprazole) Drug Interactions
Some common antidepressants, such as Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine) and Luvox (fluvoxamine) may increase the blood level and therapeutic effect of Abilify. It is possible that patients taking aripiprazole with either of these agents may experience greater Abilify side effects. Medications with similar effects on Abilify blood levels include erythromycin and its derivitives such as Biaxin (clarithromycin), Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac (all are diltiazem), Accolate (zafirlukast) and Calan, Isoptin, Verelan Covera (all are verapamil). Tarka also contains verapamil. Notify your doctor if you begin or discontinue treatments with any of these medications.
Other medications, such as Tegretol (carbamazepine), Dilantin (phenytoin), phenobarbital, or rifampin (Rifadin) may decrease the blood level and therapeutic effect of Abilify. It is possible that you may experience a decreased effect from aripiprazole if you also take one of these other medications. Medications with similar effectson Abilify metabolism include Sustiva (efavirenz), Fulvicin (griseofulvin) and Mysoline (primidone). Notify your doctor if you begin or discontinue treatments with any of these medications.
Taking Abilify and bipolar disorder drug Lithium carbonate together is apparently safe. No interaction has been documented. Same news with Abilify and bipolar disorder medication Depakote (Divalproex).
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses...

Storage
Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out Abilify and bipolar disorder medication that has become outdated or no longer needed or discontinued.
Abilify (Aripiprazole) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions
This medication should be not taken during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medication is excreted into breast milk, so avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.
