Dietary Supplement Recommendations

Anyone taking prescription or non-prescription medications for heartburn, acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) should consider some dietary supplements that have been shown to help the symptoms.

Keep in mind that the problem isn't necessarily too much stomach acid. Food digestion requires acid to complete the process.

The real problem is that your excess stomach acid isn't staying in the stomach.

Supplementing Betaine HCl during a meal has been shown to reduce or eliminate GERD, reflux and heartburn symptoms in many patients. Betaine HCl is a digestive enzyme. Taken during your meal, Betaine HCl helps your stomach digest the food you eat.

Supplementing Acidophilus can reduce or alleviate the heartburn and other symptoms. The powder or chewable tablet forms work best because the product needs to actually be on the affected area of your esophagus. The assumption is made that these friendly bacteria actually absorb or digest the excess stomach acid.

Adding extra calcium and other minerals such as magnesium have been reported to lower the acidity and also provide symptomatic relief.
