Actonel (Risedronate) Uses
This medication is used to treat osteoporosis, commonly known as brittle-bone disease, in post-menopausal women and to treat Paget's disease of the bone.

How Actonel (Risedronate) Works
This medication increases bone-building and helps decrease fracture risk. Risedronate helps bone-building cells in the bone (osteoblasts) while preventing bone resorbing, (the breakdown of bone.)

How To Take Actonel (Risedronate)
This medication should not be taken with food. Take it by mouth first thing in the morning, with a full glass of water, and wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. Do not lay back down after taking this medication. Remain upright

Actonel (Risedronate) Possible Side Effects
This medication's most common side effects include gas, reflux, heartburn, rash, and headache.

Actonel (Risedronate) Warnings and Precautions
This medication should be used with caution by patients with kidney disease, patients taking hormone replacement therapy, and patients with throat or gastric emptying problems. Tell your doctor know if you are having problems sitting or standing for 30 minutes after taking this medication. There are also risks of developing esophageal problems.

Actonel (Risedronate) Drug Interactions
Antacids decrease the absorption of this medication, which will decrease its therapeutic effects. Calcium products decrease the absorption of this medication. Wait at least one-half hour after dose of this medication before taking calcium supplement.

Ranitidine (Zantac) may increase (double) the amount of this medicine that gets absorbed into your body. The clinical significance of this is unknown. Use caution.

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses...

Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

This medication in women is intended for use after menopause. However, if this medication is used during pregnancy, it should be used only if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the possible risk to the fetus. Actonel (Risedronate) Supplement Information
Phytoestrogens and soy may compliment this medication, but studies are not available. Taking calcium and vitamin D supplements with this medication are recommended. Consult your doctor for more details.
