Actos (Pioglitazone) Uses

This medication is used to is used orally to treat type 2 diabetes. This medication helps controls type 2 diabetes but is not a cure. A combination of diet, weight management, exercise, and medications usually helps control this type of diabetes.

How Actos (Pioglitazone) Works

This medication decreases insulin resistance, helping the tissues to better utilize insulin produced by the pancreases.

How To Take Actos (Pioglitazone)

This medication is usually taken once or twice daily without regard to meals. It should be taken at the same time everyday. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), a dangerous medical condition, may result from skipping meals while taking Pioglitazone.

This medication's most common side effects include headache, weight gain, fluid retention, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar.).

Actos (Pioglitazone) Warnings and Precautions

A properly prescribed diet, insulin and regular exercise will make this medication work better toward controlling your diabetes. Inform your doctor if you have ever had liver disease, kidney disease or high blood pressure. Your doctor should check and monitor your liver before and during your treatment with this medication. Report any signs of liver problems (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, dark urine, jaundice) immediately to your doctor. Inform your doctor and pharmacist of any drug allergies, especially to related drugs (rosiglitazone or troglitazone).

Actos (Pioglitazone) Drug Interactions

This medication may reduce the effectiveness of birth-control pills. Use another form of backup contraception to prevent pregnancy.

Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications, including those purchased without prescription.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Actos (Pioglitazone) Pregnancy/Nursing Information

Consult your doctor if you plan on becoming pregnant. Discuss with your doctor the benefits versus the risks of taking Pioglitazone during pregnancy. Many experts recommend insulin to control diabetes during pregnancy. Pioglitazone is excreted in the breast milk and should not be used during pregnancy.
