This medication is taken to prevent pregnancy.

How Alesse (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) Works

This medication works by inhibiting ovulation, but also prevents pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus (to prevent sperm entry) and causes changes the endometrial lining (to reduce the likelihood of implantation). This medication does not protect against any sexually transmitted diseases.

How To Take Alesse (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol)

This medication is taken by mouth, once a day. For this medication to be effective take it regularly at the same time each day. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about when to start.

Alesse (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) Possible Side Effects

This medication common side effects include blood clots, edema (fluid retention), breast tenderness, nausea, headache and increased high blood pressure. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

Alesse (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) Warnings and Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have a history of blood clots, smoking or heart disease. Patients who have had breast cancer, or undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding should NOT use this medication.

Alesse (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) Drug Interactions

Several medications reduce the effectiveness of this medication and should be used together only with caution. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking seizure medications, antibiotics, warfarin, or medications to help you sleep. You may need to use another contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, either take it as soon as you remember or double up on the next day. If you happen to miss two doses, either take 2 tablets as soon as you remember, or take two tablets on each of the next two days. If you miss three doses, you should use a back-up contraceptive device.

Storage

Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Alesse (Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

If you suspect that you may be pregnant, do NOT take Birth Control pills. For nursing mothers, not all oral contraceptives are safe for your baby. Consult your physician regarding which one may be right for you.

Supplement Information

Oral contraceptives have been shown to deplete Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and Folic acid or Folate. These vitamins are collectively called the "stress vitamins". Consider taking a vitamin supplement.
