Amaryl (Glimepiride) Uses

This medication is used to lower elevated blood sugar associated with Type 2 Diabetes. This type of diabetes is usually controlled with a combination of diet, weight management, exercise, and medications. Amaryl is sometimes prescribed for other uses. This medicine controls type 2 diabetes but does not cure it. Contact your doctor or your pharmacist for more information on diabetes and diabetic treatments.

How To Take Amaryl (Glimepiride)

This medication is taken by mouth, usually once or twice a day. This medication can be taken with or without food. You should take this medication regularly at the same time every day. Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor.

Amaryl tablets can be crushed if you have difficulty swallowing pills.

Do not skip meals while taking Amaryl. Hypoglycemia (blood sugar too low) may result from skipping meals.

Amaryl Side Effects

This medication is generally well-tolerated and side effects are usually mild. Common side effects include hypoglycemia (blood sugar too low), weight gain, fluid retention and headache. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

Amaryl (Glimepiride) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

Do not take this medication during pregnancy. Many experts recommend insulin for diabetes control during pregnancy. This medication has been detected in breast milk, so do not take this medication while breast-feeding.
