Avandia (Rosiglitazone) Uses

This medication is used for the oral treatment of type 2 diabetes. Control of this type of diabetes is usually accomplished with a combination of diet, weight management, exercise, and medications. This medication controls type 2 diabetes but does not cure it. This medication is also used sometimes prescribed for other uses.

How Avandia (Rosiglitazone) Works

This medication works by decreasing insulin resistance. This helps the tissues to better utilize insulin produced by the pancreas.

How To Take Avandia (Rosiglitazone)

This medication is taken by mouth. Avandia is usually taken once or twice daily with or without meals. It should be taken about the same time everyday. Skipping meals while taking this medicine is not advised. This can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The tablet may be crushed to make it easer to take.

Avandia (Rosiglitazone) Possible Side Effects

This medication is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), weight gain, fluid retention and headache. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

Avandia (Rosiglitazone) Warnings and Precautions

Do NOT abruptly stop this medication without consulting your doctor.

This medication is not a substitute for a proper diet, exercise and insulin. Continue with all of the regimen your doctor has prescribed.

Tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney, liver, or heart problems, high blood pressure or any drug allergies to this or related drugs.

Liver tests should be conducted both before and during treatment with this medication. Report signs of liver problems, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, dark urine or jaundice.

Avandia (Rosiglitazone) Drug Interactions

This medication's actions can affect the effectineness of birth control pills (oral contraceptives) Use another form of contraception to prevent pregnancy. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist other drug interactions, including non-prescription drugs.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Avandia (Rosiglitazone) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

Discuss risks and benefits of taking this medication during pregnancy with your doctor. Some experts recommend only insulin during pregnancy. This medication has been detected in breast milk, so do not take this medication while breast-feeding.
