Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin) Uses

This medication is used to treat infections, such as tonsilitis, sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia and some skin infections. Biaxin is also used to treat peptic (stomach) ulcers. Biaxin XL is also used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin) Works

This medication works by stoping the growth of bacteria. This medication interferes with the production of proteins that the bacteria need to survive.

How To Take Biaxin (Clarithromycin)

This medication is taken by mouth. Biaxin should be taken with food. You should take this medication at regular intervals at the same times every day. Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, do not stop taking this medication until it is all gone.

Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin) Possible Side Effects

This medication is generally well-tolerated and side effects are usually mild. Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain and abnormal taste. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin ) Warnings and Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney or liver problems. Tell your doctor about any drug allergies.

Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin) Drug Interactions

This medication's actions can be affected by anticoagulants, theophylline, carbamazepine and triazolam. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Biaxin XL (Clarithromycin) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

Do not take this medication during pregnancy. It is unknown if Biaxin is excreted into breast milk, so do not take this medication while breast-feeding.

Supplement Information

Antibiotics, such as this drug, may decrease the amount of good or beneficial bacteria in your intestines needed for normal digestion. Probiotic, Lactinex and other brands of supplements replace these good bacteria when you are taking antibiotics.
