Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) Uses
This medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), and is sometimes used to treat angina (chest pains).
How Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) Works
This medication works by blocking the normal passage of calcium through cell walls, preventing arteriole (blood vessell) narrowing.
How To Take Cardizem CD (Diltiazem)
This medication is normally taken once daily and may be taken with or without food.
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) Possible Side Effects
This medication may cause edema (fluid retention), headache, dizziness and occaisonal flushing and weakness.
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) Warnings and Precautions
Do not open, crush, or chew this medication. This is an extended-release form.
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) should probably not be taken if you have a history of congestive heart failure (CHF) or liver disease.
Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) Drug Interactions
The effects of beta blockers (also for blood pressure) may be increased by this medication. Also, use of this medication at the same time as Duragesic or fentanyl (for chronic severe pain) may cause severe drop in blood pressure, so caution is advised. Tegretol or Carbamazepine (a seizure medication) and cimetidine and other acid blockers may increase blood levels of this medication.

Storage
Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that has become outdated or no longer needed or discontinued.

Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) should be taken only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Risks and benefits should be discussed with your doctor. Cardizem CD (Diltiazem) is excreted into breast milk, so caution should be exercised if breastfeeding.
