Depakote (Divalproex) Uses
This medication's primary use is to prevent seizures (anticonvulsant). It is also approved to treat bipolar disorder and for prevention of migraine headaches.
How Depakote (Divalproex) Works
The exact mechanism of action this medication exerts is not proven, however it is believed that this drug's effects are related to increasing levels of a chemical normally found in the brain called GABA.
How To Take Depakote (Divalproex)
Usual dosing is once a day. This medication should be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew.

Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
Depakote (Divalproex) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions
This medication can cause fetal damage during the first trimester and should not be used during pregnancy if other options are available. This medication has been shown to be excreted in breast milk, so use with caution while breast-feeding.
