This medication is used to treat depression. This medication is also used to treat anxiety. Your doctor may also prescribe Effexor XR for other conditions.

How Effexor XR (Venlafaxine) Works

This medication works by blocking the reuptake of certain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain. These neurotransmitters are serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.

How To Take Effexor XR (Venlafaxine)

This medication is taken by mouth. Venlafaxine should be taken with food. You should take this medication regularly at the same time every day.

Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor.

Possible Effexor Side Effects (Venlafaxine)

This medication may cause dizzyness, drowsiness, sweating, appetite loss, dry mouth, anxiety, tremor, blurred vision, constipation and sleepiness.

Use caution when driving or performing other activities requiring alertness.

Effexor XR (Venlafaxine) Warnings and Precautions

Before taking Effexor XR (Venlafaxine), tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney, heart or liver disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), glaucoma or any allergies.

Elderly patients are more sensitive to the adverse side effects of Effexor XR (Venlafaxine). Exercise caution.

This medication can interact with other drugs including Lithium, Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, Risperidone and Cimetidine.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Effexor XR (Venlafaxine) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

This medication should be taken only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Risks and benefits should be discussed with your doctor. It is unknown if this medication is excreted into breast milk, so caution should be exercised if breastfeeding.
