Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate) Uses

This medication is a cortiscosterioid used for maintenance and prevention of chronic asthma, either alone or in conjunction with other medications. This medication may be used by patients on oral steroids requiring dose reduction.

How Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate) Works

This medication and other cortiscosterioids work as potent anti-inflammatory agents, blocking bronchoconstriction and relaxing smooth muscles of the bronchioles (the tubules carrying air into and out of the lungs).

How To Take Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate)

This medication is generally used twice daily. Shake container well before each dose. For best results, this medication should be taken continuously. Do not skip doses. This medication is not effective for acute attacks. Use your rescue inhaler for acute attacks.

Possible Flovent Side Effects (Fluticasone Propionate)

This medication is generally well-tolerated and side effects are usually mild. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, nervousness, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea and thrush. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate) Warnings and Precautions

Avoid anyone who has chicken pox or measles while taking this medicine. Patients who have compromised immune systems are at higher risk of infection.

If bronchospasms and wheezing occur after dosing, the patient should use a fast-acting bronchodilator and discontinue the this medication until seen by a physician.

Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate) Drug Interactions

This medication effects may be increased by Ketoconazole (Nizoral) and perhaps other AZOLE antifungals and ritonavir (Norvir). Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

Safe use of this medication during pregnancy has not been established. Consult your doctor about risks versus benefits before taking this medication during pregnancy. It is unknown whether this medication is excreted into breast milk, so exercise caution concerning taking this medication while breast-feeding.

Supplement Information

Possible nutrient depletions with Flovent include calcium, folic acid, zinc, magnesium, potassium selenium, vitamin C, and vitamin D. Patients should consider supplementing these nutrients.
