Hyzaar (Losartan and HCTZ) Uses

This medication is used to lower high blood pressure. Hyzaar controls high blood pressure, but does not cure it. This medication is also used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Hyzaar (Losartan and HCTZ) Works

This medication works by blocking a chemical reaction that constricts blood vessels. This produces a relaxing or widening of blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a diuretic (water pill) and is believed to lower blood pressure by reducing excess fluid and sodium.

How To Take Hyzaar (Losartan and HCTZ)

This medication is taken by mouth, usually once a day. Hyzaar can be taken with or without food. You should take this medication regularly at the same time every day. Do not stop taking Hyzaar without first consulting your doctor.

Hyzaar (Losartan and HCTZ) Possible Side Effects

This medication common side effects include cough, headache, dizziness, upset stomach, diarrhea and fatigue. HCTZ can cause dizziness, headache, gastric upset and increased sun sensitivity. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

Discuss with your doctor and pharmacist the prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking, especially water pills (diuretics) or other heart or blood pressure medications. HCTZ is known to interact with blood thinners (anticoagulants), lithium, some gout medications, and calcium.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Hyzaar (Losartan and HCTZ) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

Do not take this medication during pregnancy because of the possibility of fetal damage. It is not known whether this medication excreted into breast milk, so exercise caution in deciding whether to use this medication while breast-feeding. Discuss possible risks with your doctor.
