How Lotrel (Amlodipine and Benazepril ) Works
Lotrel is a combination of two drugs, Amlodipine (Norvasc) and Benazepril (Lotensin) Amlodipine is called a calcium channel blocker. Blocking the flow of calcium across cell membranes decreases the contraction of heart muscle and the constriction of blood vessels, lowering blood pressure. The benazepril portion is an ACE inhibitor, reducing blood pressure by inhibiting a chemical reaction that creates a vasoconstrictor. Use of the fixed combination is generally started in those patients who have already been stabilized on the separate medications individually.
