Neurontin (Gabapentin) Uses

This medication is an anticonvulsant used for treating seizures. You may also be prescribed this medication for other conditions as well, such as chronic pain or diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage).

How Neurontin (Gabapentin) Works

This medication apparently increase a chemical in the brain (GABA) that slows down or inhibits nerve impulse transmission.

How To Take Neurontin (Gabapentin)

Follow the directions given to you by your doctor. This medication is taken orally (by mouth). This medication can be taken with or without food. Take this medication regularly at the same time every day. Do not take with 2 hours of antacids containing auminum or magnesium

Possible Neurontin Side Effects (Gabapentin)

This medication may cause dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, or stomach upset. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you notice vision changes, eye movements (back and forth), mental changes, mood changes or memory loss.

Neurontin (Gabapentin) Warnings and Precautions

This medication will add to the drowsy effects caused by alcohol and other Central Nervous System (CNS) depressants. Do NOT drive a motor vehicle or perform other dangerous tasks until you see how this medication will affect you. Consult with your doctor before you stop taking this medicine.

Consult with your doctor before you start taking any new prescription or over-the-counter medicine. Carry an identification card with your to let any doctors and emergency personnel that you are taking this medication.

Neurontin (Gabapentin) Drug Interactions

Antacids may decrease the beneficial effects of this medication. Cimetidine (Tagamet) may increase your blood levels of this medication. If you are taking phenytoin (Dilantin) for seizures, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Taking these two drugs (Gabapentin and Phenytoin) together may cause phenytoin toxicity.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Neurontin (Gabapentin) Pregnancy/Nursing Precaution

If you are, or plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits versus the risks of taking this medication while pregnant. This medication is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor if you plan to breast feed.
