Risperdal (Risperidone) Uses

This medication is used for the treatment of psychotic disorders. Your doctor may prescribe this medication for other condition as well, such as treatment of aggression, Tourette's syndrome and other conditions.

How Risperdal (Risperidone) Works

This medication works by adjusting an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain. Psychotic symptoms are thought to be caused by an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain.

How To Take Risperdal (Risperidone)

This medication is taken by mouth, with or without food. You should take this medication regularly at the same time every day, exactly as prescribed.

Risperdal (Risperidone) Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth and weight gain. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

Notify your doctor right away if you experience muscle stiffness, spasms or twitching or any other involuntary movements of the face or tongue.

Report any pounding or irregular heartbeat to your doctor immediately.

Risperdal (Risperidone) Warnings and Precautions

Before taking this medication, let your doctor know if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, blood disorders or a history of seizures.

This medication may cause drowsiness. Do NOT drive or perform other activities requiring your full attention and alertness until you know how you react to it.

Do NOT stop taking this medicine without first talking to your doctor, even if you are feeling better.

Risperdal (Risperidone) Drug Interactions

Certain antidepressant drug (SSRI's) may lead to serotonin syndrome when given along with this medication. Inform your doctor if you are taking any other antipsychotic medications or medications for seizures. Certain seizure drugs (such as phenytoin, carbamazepine) may reduce the therapeutic effects of this medication. Venlafaxine (Effexor) may increase toxicity of this medication. Tramadol (Ultram) may increase the associated risk of seizures.

When starting any new medicine, (prescription or non-prescription), consult your doctor or pharmacist first.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Risperdal (Risperidone) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

If you are planning on becoming pregnant, consult your doctor first. For nursing mothers, it is not known whether this medication is excreted into breast milk. Your doctor can give you more details about any risks to your baby while taking this medication.
