How Seroquel (Quetiapine) Works

This medication works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain called "neurotransmitters". These neurotransmitters influence behavior and mood.

How To Take Seroquel (Quetiapine)

This medication is taken by mouth. This medication can be taken with or without food. You should take this medication regularly at the same time every day.

Take this medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medication.

Possible Seroquel Side Effects (Quetiapine)

This medication's common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation and dry mouth. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional.

See a doctor immediately if you experience unexplained fever, extreme muscle stiffness, uncontrolled muscle movements ( such as tongue or face), vision changes, fast or irregular heartbeat, sweating or change in alertness.

Seroquel (Quetiapine) Warnings and Precautions

Do not abruptly stop this medication without consulting your doctor.

This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Alcoholic beverages can increase these effects and should be avoided.

While taking this medication, avoid getting overheated and drink plenty of liquids when exposed to warm temperatures. Be careful when sitting up quickly from a lying down position, especially in the first 3 to 5 days of your treatment or when your doctor increases your dose of this drug.

Tell your doctor if you have had an allergy to this medication or any other medicine in the past.

Seroquel (Quetiapine) Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor, nurse of pharmacist all the medications that you are taking, either prescription or non-prescription, including herbal supplements.

This medication may interact with levodopa (Sinemet), lorazepam (Ativan), certain high blood pressure medications, pergolide (Permax), phenytoin (Dilantin), pramipexole (Mirapex), rifampin (Rifadin), selegiline (Eldepryl), thioridazine (Mellaril), certain vitamins, amantadine (Symmetrel), barbiturates, bromocriptine (Parlodel), carbamazapine (Tegretol), cimetidine (Tagamet), erythromycin, fluconazole (Diflucan), cortisone-like drugs (prednisone; hydrocortisone), itraconazole (Sporanox) and ketoconazole (Nizoral). Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
