Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) Uses

This medication is used in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease. Your doctor may prescribe this medication for other conditions.

How To Take Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa)

This medication is taken by mouth and can be taken with food to minimize stomach upset. As your body becomes used to this medication, it should be taken on an empty stomach. You should take this medication regularly at the same time(s) every day. Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor.

If you are taking the extended-release (CR) forms, swallow the tablet whole, do not crush or chew. You may break the tablet in half if the whole pill is too large for you to take comfortably.

Possible Sinemet Side Effects (Carbidopa/Levodopa)

This medication's common side effects include stomach upset, dry mouth, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness and change in taste. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor promptly. If you experience other side effects not listed here, contact your health care provider.

Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) Warnings and Precautions

Do NOT abruptly stop this medication without consulting your doctor.

This medication can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Be careful when driving or performing other hazardous activities. This medication can impair judgement during these activities.

Diets high in protein may have an effect your bodys ability to absorb Sinemet. Talk to your doctor or nurse for more informtion.

Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) Drug Interactions

This medication can interact with some common medications, including Haloperidol (Haldol), Phenothiazines (Thorazine, Prolixin, Serentil, Mellaril, Compazine), Thioxanthenes (Navane, Taractan), MAO inhibitors (Marplan, Nardil) and Selegiline.

Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) reverses the effects of this medication.

Let your doctor know if you are taking any supplements or herbal products before taking Sinemet.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep your Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

Discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication during pregnancy. It is not known whether Sinemet is excreted into breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine until you have talked to your doctor or pediatrician.
