Vioxx (Rofecoxib) Uses

This medication is used to treat the symptoms of arthritis, such as joint pain, inflammation, swelling and stiffness. This medication is not a cure for arthritis and provides relief only as long as you continue to take this medication. This medication may also be used to treat other conditions. This medication has also been found to be effective for painful menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea.)

How Vioxx (Rofecoxib) Works

This medication inhibits the COX II enzyme. Blocking the COX II enzyme reduces prostaglandins which play a role in arthritis pain, swelling and inflammation.

How To Take Vioxx (Rofecoxib)

Follow the doctor's directions. This medication can be taken with or without food. This medication is generally taken once daily. Continue to take Rofecoxib even when you feel better.

Possible Vioxx Side Effects (Rofecoxib)

Generally well tolerated, This medication's possible side effects include stomach upset or dyspepsia (indigestion.) or

If you have an allergic reaction to this medication, immediately seek medical attention. Symptoms include rash, itching, swelling, dizzyness and/or trouble breathing.

Vioxx (Rofecoxib) Warnings and Precautions

Precautions include alcohol abuse and liver disease or any past history of kidney or liver involvement. Liver disease may be aggravated by this medication.

It is also recommended that this medication be used with caution if there is history of kidney disease, high blood pressure, asthma and heart disease.

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to aspirin, other arthritis medicines or sulfonamides (sulfa drugs), because of possible cross-sensitivity.

Rofecoxib Drug Interactions

This medication can increase the effectiveness of blood thinners (warfarin) and decrease the effectiveness of some blood pressure medicines (ace inhibitors). This medication can decrease the effectiveness of furosemide (Lasix). Inform your doctor if you are taking lithium, methotrexate or rifampin. This medication can be safely taken with low-dose aspirin therapy, but the chances of stomach ulcers or other complications may increase.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Vioxx (Rofecoxib) Pregnancy/Nursing Precaution

The safety and efficacy of this medication for use in pregnant women has not been clearly established. This medication should not be taken in late pregnancy. If you are, or plan on becoming pregnant, consult your doctor about the use of this medication during pregnancy. This medication may be excreted into breast milk. Avoid nursing while taking this medication.

Dietary Supplement Recommendations

Patients may benefit from a Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin combination. This supplement actually helps rebuild cartilidge in the joint.

Patients should also consider Coral Calcium supplementation. Coral Calcium alkalinizes (raises the pH of) the body. This raised pH might help alleviate the stomach upset that can occur with this class of drugs (NSAIDS).
