Zoloft (Sertraline) Uses

Zoloft (Sertraline) is used to treat depression, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Sertraline is also approved for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Your doctor may also use Sertraline to treat certain other conditions as well.

How Zoloft (Sertraline) Works

Zoloft (Sertraline) relieves depression and other conditions by slowly restoring a chemical in the brain (serotonin) to normal levels. Proper levels of serotonin are necessary for our sense of well-being.

How To Take Zoloft (Sertraline)

Follow the instructions that your doctor has given you. Take Zoloft (Sertraline) regularly and continuously at the same time every day. Don't skip doses. Sertraline is taken by mouth and may be taken right after food to avoid possible stomach upset.

Zoloft (Sertraline) Possible Side Effects

Zoloft (Sertraline) effects include nausea, diarrhea, increased sweating, ejaculation delay, nervousness, trouble sleeping, headache, drowsiness, dry mouth, tremor or muscle spasms. If you experience side effects that are bothersome or don't subside, or you are experiencing vision changes, mood or mental changes or prolonged and painful erections, talk to your doctor immediately.

Zoloft (Sertraline) Warnings and Precautions

Zoloft (Sertraline) may take 2 to 4 weeks to reach its full effect.

Don't stop taking Zoloft (Sertraline) without consulting with your doctor first.

Also, make sure you know how you react to Zoloft (Sertraline) before driving or performing tasks that require your full attention.

Zoloft (Sertraline) has an added effect when taken with alcohol. Alcohol is not recommended while on Sertraline.

Zoloft (Sertraline) Drug Interactions

Certain antibiotics (Erythromycin and its derivatives) can increase the effects of sertraline and may lead to a condition called, "Serotonin Syndrome." Symptoms of "Serotonin Syndrome" include increased muscle tone, shivering and altered consciousness.

If you are taking a tricyclic antidepressant, talk to your doctor before taking Sertraline.

Certain other antidepressants may increase the negative side effects of Sertraline when they are taken together.

Sertraline should not be taken with St. John's Wort, a natural antidepressant.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

Storage

Keep Zoloft (Sertraline) in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that has become outdated or no longer needed or discontinued.

Zoloft (Sertraline) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions

Adequate studies of Sertraline and pregnant women are not available. Talk to your doctor before using Zoloft (Sertraline). Sertraline has been detected in breast milk. Discuss breast feeding with your doctor.
