Zovirax (Acyclovir) Uses This medication is used in the treatment and prevention of viral infections from oral herpes, genital herpes, or varicella-zoster viruses. These conditions are also known as cold sores, sexually transmitted herpes, chicken-pox, and shingles. How Zovirax (Acyclovir) Works This medication works by stopping the replication of the herpes virus by blocking the formation of its genetic materials. How To Take Zovirax (Acyclovir) This medication is taken by mouth and may be taken with food if stomach upset occurs. Take the full course of this medicine as directed. For herpes outbreaks, patients are generally given 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 to 10 days. For repeat infections doses are usually 200 mg given 5 times daily for 5 days. This medication also comes in an ointment form. The ointment is used on the affected area usually every 3 hours ( 6 times per day) for 7 days. Zovirax (Acyclovir) Possible Side Effects This medication's common side effects include stomach upset, headache, feeling tired, rash and insomnia. If you experience any other side effects, contact your healthcare professional. Zovirax (Acyclovir) Warnings and Precautions This medication should be used with caution in patients with a history of liver or kidney disease and with existing neurological problems. Zovirax (Acyclovir) Drug Interactions This medication may interact with other drugs used to treat viral infections. Discuss with your doctor or pharmacist. Missed Dose If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses Storage Keep your prescription in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Zovirax (Acyclovir) Pregnancy/Nursing Precautions This medication should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the possible risks to the fetus.
