Zyprexa (Olanzapine) Uses
This medication is used to treat thinking problems and other difficulties often seen in psychosis. This medication is also used for treatment of mania in bipolar patients. You doctor may prescribe this medicine for other purposes as well.
How Zyprexa (Olanzapine) Works
This medication works by restoring an imbalance of two important nerve transmitters (dopamine and serotonin). This medication also works at other neurotransmitter sites including; histamine, muscarinic, GABA, BZD and adrenergic sites.
How To Take Zyprexa (Olanzapine)
This medication is taken by mouth. This medication can be taken with food. You should take this medication regularly at the same time every day. Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor. Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication.
Zyprexa (Olanzapine) Possible Side Effects
This medication common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, somnolence, edema (fluid retention), weight gain and constipation. If you experience any other side effects, especially hair loss, difficulty swallowing or abnormal movement, immediately contact your doctor.
Zyprexa (Olanzapine) Warnings and Precautions
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have a seizure disorder, narcoleptic malignant syndrome, liver disease, low blood pressure, heart disease, narrow angle glaucoma, history of breast cancer or problems swallowing.
This medication can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Restrict your driving and other activitis requiring alertness while taking this medication.
If you are planning to have surgery with general or spinal anesthesia in the near future, inform your doctor before taking this medication.
Smoking causes your body to metabolize this medication up to 40% faster.
Do Not take this medication if you have previously had an allergic reaction to it.
Zyprexa (Olanzapine) Drug Interactions
Taking other sedative medications with this medication may cause added drowsy effects. Omeprazole (Prilosec), Carbamazepine (Tegretol) and rifampin decrease the effects of this medication. Toxicity from this medication can be caused by Certain antibiotics (fluroquinolones - Levaquin, Cipro, Avelox, etc) and fluvoxamine (Luvox).
Consult your doctor or pharmacist about any questions about these or other drug interactions.
If you miss a dose, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw out medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
